“166 Years in the making and 3 years in the doing” is how our Joint MD and Owner Simon Terry describes Spring Light, our new book by author Jonathan Glancey. It shines a light on our design history with pages of treasured intricate illustrations, stunning photography, special memories and over 90 years of design influence.
Starting with a Foreward by Sir John Hegarty, who dissects the makings of a brand icon, the reader is then guided through Angelpoise’s history by Jonathan Glancey, starting with an introduction to the design, George Carwardine’s beginnings and even Anglepoise during the Second World War.
We get to peek through the archives and experience the launch of the Model 1227 through the accompanying advertising of the time, we see how beloved the ‘humble lamp’ became in films and cinema and, we learn of its development from the 1970s through to the 2000s. With Simon at the helm, the 2000s heralded working relationships with industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange as well as collaborations with the likes of Paul Smith and Margaret Howell, all of which have helped rejuvenate the brand for a new generation.
In a chapter titled Undimmed Light: the future of Anglepoise and new designs, we also experience more recent innovations and get a glimpse of what the future may hold too.
Spring light is the perfect coffee table book for Anglepoise fans and design lovers alike. It adds to Jonathan’s portfolio of architectural books including: The Story of Architecture, Lost Buildings, 20th Century Architecture, Architecture: A Visual History, London: Bread and Circuses and John Betjeman on Churches.
